Train drivers in Indonesia often apply split sleep because their rest time is also used for family needs, worship, and commuting to and from the station. This study aims to examine the impact of split sleep on the level of fatigue when operating trains. Fifteen male participants were asked to drive a train simulator for 2.5 hours in the laboratory after applying two sleep conditions, split sleep and baseline or normal sleep. The split sleep condition was carried out by dividing sleep into two segments, from 05.00 to 10.00 and from 12.00 to 15.00, while the baseline condition was carried out in one segment only, from 21.00 to 05.00. Fatigue was measured using the duration and frequency of blinking using an eye tracker and a subjective questionnaire, the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory (SOFI). The measurement of blinking duration and frequency was carried out for 2.5 hours, while the SOFI questionnaire was only filled out at the beginning and end of the experiment. The results of this study show an increase in fatigue between split sleep and baseline conditions based on blinking frequency, duration of blinking, and SOFI values. In addition, there is an increase in fatigue between the initial and final simulation conditions based on blinking duration and SOFI values. Therefore, the implementation of split sleep must be accompanied by good duration and quality of sleep. The fulfillment of sleep duration (7-8 hours) and the improvement of sleep quality need to be carried out as a mitigation strategy to minimize the impact of fatigue due to split sleep. text
