Description
Summary:Based on the 13th United Nations Climate Change Conference meeting in 2007, Indonesia has a target to reduce greenhouse emissions which directly requires Indonesia to develop renewable energy, primarily in the electricity sector. Energy from ocean waves is one of the potential renewable energy sources in Mentawai. The Marine Geological Institute (MGI) ESDM wave energy potential modeling suggests that the western Mentawai seas provide an annual average wave energy of up to 20 kW/m. This research is the first project for an offshore wave power plant location in Southeast Asia. The location for this study has been selected based on the feasibility of the government's maritime spatial plan in the Tuapejat. A marine geological survey is required to identify a site off the shore in Tuapejat that might be used as an optimal wave power plant based on resource efficiency and risk of loss variables such as cost, time, range, and geological hazard. Acoustic instruments such as the Echosounder Odec, SBP Stratabox, and Star Fish Side-scan sonar are used to locate underwater geological features. All primary data will be integrated and evaluated using an analitical hierarchy process and a geographic information system to determine suitability map locations. The presence of submarine outcrops, thrust faults, sandy beaches, continental shelf with a shallow seabed, and gentle slope with an average depth of 30 m are significant aspects in deciding the locations of the wave power plant. Optimal locations for potential power plant sites are in coastal areas located in offshore near Batu putih coast, with a weight value of 0,30-0,31, a depth of 20-25 m, an installation distance of 3 km, a fault distance of 1,5-2 km, a slope of 0-8%, coarse-medium sand sediments, and an average wave energy potential of 15- 20 kW/m.
