ATTRACTIVITY OF VARIOUS FRUIT SPECIES TO AEDES AEGYPTI AND CULEX QUINQUEFASCIATUS MOSQUITOES IN A LABORATORY

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and lymphatic filariasis. Until now, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is still a significant health problem in Indonesia due to the increasing number of DHF patients and its wide distribution. Similarly, filariasis is still a problem in several places in Indonesia. Curre...

Until now, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is still a significant health problem in Indonesia due to the increasing number of DHF patients and its wide distribution. Similarly, filariasis is still a problem in several places in Indonesia. Currently, the control of dengue fever and lymphatic filariasis is focused on eliminating the mosquito vectors Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. One of the new mosquito control methods being developed is Attractive Toxic Sugar Bait (ATSB). Attractive Toxic Sugar Bait is a combination of fruit-derived attractants and insecticides. This combination is an efficient control method for attracting and killing mosquitoes. Based on this, a study was conducted to determine the potential and effectiveness of sugar attractants (Attractive Sugar Bait or ASB). The ASB tested were fresh fruit juices of mango (Mangifera indica), guava (Psidium guajava), papaya (Carica papaya), banana (Musa paradisiaca), and avocado (Persea americana). Experiments were conducted using Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. Data were tested based on the number of mosquito landings on each bait. The results of this study showed mango had significantly higher attractant potential than other ASB (P < 0,05) in male and female Aedes aegypti, while in male and female Culex quinquefasciatus, mango and guava had significantly higher attractant potential than other ASB (P < 0,05). This study concludes that mango juice shows the highest attraction to male and female Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. This is the first reported test of the fruit's potential as an Attractive Sugar Bait against male and female Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, so it is hoped that the results of this test can provide an overview of the potential of ASB in different mosquito species. text
