Description
Summary:Sebum is a complex mixture of lipids secreted and produced by sebaceous glands. Sebum is found in almost all areas of human skin and is an important factor that can affect the partition of active ingredients into the skin. Synthetic sebum was made to represent sebum on the skin in chemical adsorption and partition studies. However, synthetic sebum is difficult to obtain in Indonesia. This study aimed to develop synthetic sebum formula and the stability against storage and the effectiveness based on partition coefficient of salicylic acid compound. Synthetic sebum was prepared by heating method, determined specific gravity, storage evaluation at temperature 4°C, 25°C, and 40°C, as well as effectiveness test based on the partition coefficient. The synthetic sebum formula was made using squalene, jojoba oil, palm oil, soybean oil, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, and cholesterol. The specific gravity obtained was 0.902 ± 0.004 g/cm3. Synthetic sebum stored at 4°C and room temperature was unstable, while synthetic sebum stored at 40°C is organoleptically stable and unstable based on viscosity. The result of effectiveness test of the salicylic acid partition coefficient on sebum (Ksw) has a low value of 0.76 ± 0.004.
