ANTIDIARRHEAL ACTIVITY OF THE EXTRACT ETHANOL OF KECOMBRANG LEAVES AND FLOWERS [ETLINGERA ELATIOR (JACK) R.M. SMITH] IN FEMALE SWISS WEBSTER MICE

Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death in children under five years of age and about 525,000 children die each yearfrom diarrhea. Besides being treatable with loperamide, people also use plants such as guava leaves and kecombrang to treat diarrhea. Kecombrang leaves and flowers are often used...

Besides being treatable with loperamide, people also use plants such as guava leaves and kecombrang to treat diarrhea. Kecombrang leaves and flowers are often used as flavor enhancers or food fragrances. Traditionally, kecombrang has antidiarrheal properties. However, there have been no studies on the antidiarrheal activity of kecombrang plants. This study aimed to test the antidiarrheal effect of ethanol extract of kecombrang leaves and flowers [Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M. Smith]. The active compounds in the leaves and flowers of kecombrang are macerated with 70% ethanol. Antidiarrheal efficacy was tested on mice with castor oil as an inducer ofdiarrhea. Two doses ofkecombrang leafethanol extract (EEDK) are 200 (EEDKR) and 400 mg/kgBW mice (EEDKT) and kecombrang flower ethanol extract (EEBK) 150 (EEBKR) and 450 mg/kgBW mice (EEBKT). The ethanol extract yield obtained was 26.7% for leaves and 11.2% for flowers. The results showed EEDKR and EEDKT inhibited the onset of diarrhea very meaningfully (p<O.01) which was 54.2 ± 7.3 minutes and 57.2 ± 9.2 minutes respectively vs control which was 19.2 ± 6.1 minutes. EEDKR also significantly reduced diarrhea (p<O.05) by 8.6 ± 1.5 times vs. control by 13.9 ± 1.1 times. Both doses of EEDK and EEBK inhibit intestinal peristalsis meaningfully (p<O.05) with EEDKR peristaltic index: 37.3 ± 6.0; EEDKT: 43.8 ± 10.2; EEBKR: 52.4 ± 10.6; and EEBKT: 53.4 ± 10.1 vs control i.e. 66.1 ± 8.5. Based on the results of this study, ethanol extract of kecombrang leaves and flowers has potential as an antidiarrheal. Kecombrang leaf ethanol extract is more potential as an antidiarrheal than ethanol extract of its flowers. The antidiarrhea/ effect of low-dose kecombrang leaf ethanol extract (200 mg/kgBW) which is equivalent to the dose used traditionally is better than the high dose (400 mg/kgBW) and both doses of kecombrangflower ethanol extract tested. text
