Ti-Cu alloy is one of the biomaterials that can be used as bone implants. The
advantages of Ti-Cu alloy are having good biocompatibility and corrosion
resistance, anti-bacterial properties, high strength, and low modulus of elasticity.
The spark plasma sintering (SPS) method can be used to adsorb Ti-Cu alloys with
low pore counts. Heat treatment of conventional powder metallurgical products has
been commonly carried out, but the heat treatment of spark plasma sintering results
is still a lack of research. Providing heat treatment to the sintered Ti-5Cu product
with spark plasma sintering (SPS) is an attempt to study the effect of heat treatment
on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Ti-5Cu alloy.
Heat treatment annealing was carried out at a temperature of 790°C held for 1 hour,
solution treatment was carried out at 805°C held for 1 hour followed by rapid
cooling, and aging was carried out at a temperature of 400°C and 475°C with a
holding time of 24 hours and 8 hours sequentially. The results of each heat treatment
will be analysed for its microstructure using an Optical Microscope (OM) and
Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS).
While the mechanical properties analysed were compressive strength through a
compressive test and alloy hardness through a micro hardness test.
The results of heat treatment on Ti-5Cu gave effect to the microstructure and
mechanical properties of the alloy. The results of the annealing heat treatment
showed that the microstructure of the Ti2Cu precipitate was spherical and fairly
evenly distributed in the grain boundaries of the -Ti matrix. The results of the
mechanical properties of the annealing did not provide a significant increase from
as-received. Heat treatment solution treatment only without continued aging
provides a microstructure without the presence of Ti2Cu precipitates. The
mechanical properties of the solution treatment alone were the lowest compared to
all the heat treatments applied. Aging of the Ti-5Cu alloy from SPS showed that the
Ti2Cu precipitate grew uniformly and elongated at the grain boundaries of the -Ti
matrix. The mechanical properties of Ti-5Cu after being given aging treatment for
24 hours and 8 hours gave a significant increase compared to before being given
heat treatment with ultimate compressive strength of 1801 MPa and hardness of
562.8 HV. |
