Description
Summary:Sea level continues to fluctuate depending on the occurring processes in the sea. Sea level rise (SLR) is identified through sea level anomaly (SLA) data processing. Regional SLR is caused by sea surface warming which triggers thermal expansion and further increasing sea level height. Regional sea surface warming is triggered by climate variability. This research focus on the study of SLR variability in Indonesian waters during 1993 – 2021 based on multi-satellite altimeter SLA dataset. It was found that during this period, Indonesia's SLA fluctuated through seasonal, interannual, and decadal pattern. The average result of Indonesian waters shows that there is a sea level rise of 17,82 cm from 1993 to 2021. Regional rise rate in Indonesian waters reaches 4,20 mm/year, higher than the global rise rate of 3,2 mm/year. Linear projection shows that in 2050, the average SLA of Indonesian waters will reach 22,48 cm. Northern Papua waters have the highest rise rate of 4,57 mm/year and are projected to reach 24,45 cm in 2050. Natuna Sea has the lowest rise rate of 3,69 mm/year. Spatial variations of rise rate in Indonesian waters increases from west to east near the Pacific Ocean. This pattern is caused by the response of Indonesian waters to the ENSO, IOD, and PDO phenomena. The northwest monsoon, La Niña, negative IOD, and negative PDO resulted in SLA increase while the southeast monsoon, El Niño, and positive IOD that occurred during the study period resulted in SLA decrease of the Indonesian waters.
