Stagnant water on roads during or after rain can cause hydroplaning which threatens the safety of road users. One of attempts to overcome the hydroplaning’s potential is the use of porous asphalt mixtures which are mainly used to increase safety by increasing the frictional properties of pavement surface in wet condition and reducing hydroplaning’s potential by allowing surface’s water to flow into the pavement. Behind its advantages, porous asphalt mixtures have several disadvantages, namely low stability, low durability, and higher aging potential. Various efforts to improve the performance of porous asphalt continue to be carried out, one of which is the use of modified asphalt compared to conventional (non-modified) asphalt, where the practice that is most widely used is the use of Performance Grade (PG) asphalt. This study aims to analyze the performance of Porous Asphalt mixtures using Asphalt Colflex® and PG-76 Asphalt PEN 60/70 on Marshall characteristic values, Cantabro Loss, permanent deformation, resilient modulus, and stripping potential. The porous asphalt mixture gradation that being used is from ASTM D7064/D7064M-08 Standard Practice for Open Graded Friction Course (OGFC) Mix Design gradation in 2013 Based on basic rheological testing, Colflex® PG-76 asphalt has characteristics which are all better than PEN 60/70 asphalt, especially on the penetration value and softening point which affect the value of the Penetration Index (PI). The PI value for Colflex® PG-76 asphalt is 2.8649 and for PEN 60/70 asphalt is -1.1595. This shows that Asphalt Colflex® PG 76 is more resistant to temperature compared to Asphalt PEN 60/70. Whereas in the mechanistic rheology test with the DSR tool, Asphalt Colflex® PG 76 has better resistance to rutting criteria than Asphalt PEN 60/70 both in the original condition and in the condition after RTFOT. The optimum asphalt content (OAC) obtained based on the VIM, Asphalt Drain Down, and Cantabro Loss tests is 5.6% for porous asphalt mixture with Colflex® PG-76 asphalt and 6.0% for porous asphalt mixture with PEN 60/70 asphalt. Based on mixed performance testing, porous asphalt using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt has the highest Marshall stability value than other mixtures, the TSR value is more than 80% which already meets the minimum value required by ASTM with ITS testing, the best permanent deformation resistance (rutting) compared to other mixtures because the asphalt temperature resistance is much better than conventional asphalt. Comparison of the resilient modulus value of the porous asphalt mixture using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt and PEN 60/70 asphalt showed that the mixture using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt had the highest resilient modulus value than the other mixtures, although the value did not reach 1000 MPa. This is because the air voids possessed by the porous asphalt mixture in this study are more than 20%, which affects the durability of the porous asphalt mixture. In general, porous asphalt mixtures using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt have the best performance compared to porous asphalt mixtures using PEN 60/70 asphalt. This is in accordance with the recommendations from ASTM, which is the use of modified asphalt to improve the performance of porous asphalt mixtures text |

Nowadays, the safety of road pavement become one of the important issues in road
construction. Stagnant water on roads during or after rain can cause hydroplaning
which threatens the safety of road users. One of attempts to overcome the
hydroplaning’s potential is the use of porous asphalt mixtures which are mainly
used to increase safety by increasing the frictional properties of pavement surface
in wet condition and reducing hydroplaning’s potential by allowing surface’s water
to flow into the pavement. Behind its advantages, porous asphalt mixtures have
several disadvantages, namely low stability, low durability, and higher aging
potential. Various efforts to improve the performance of porous asphalt continue to
be carried out, one of which is the use of modified asphalt compared to conventional
(non-modified) asphalt, where the practice that is most widely used is the use of
Performance Grade (PG) asphalt. This study aims to analyze the performance of
Porous Asphalt mixtures using Asphalt Colflex® and PG-76 Asphalt PEN 60/70 on
Marshall characteristic values, Cantabro Loss, permanent deformation, resilient
modulus, and stripping potential. The porous asphalt mixture gradation that being
used is from ASTM D7064/D7064M-08 Standard Practice for Open Graded
Friction Course (OGFC) Mix Design gradation in 2013
Based on basic rheological testing, Colflex® PG-76 asphalt has characteristics
which are all better than PEN 60/70 asphalt, especially on the penetration value
and softening point which affect the value of the Penetration Index (PI). The PI
value for Colflex® PG-76 asphalt is 2.8649 and for PEN 60/70 asphalt is -1.1595.
This shows that Asphalt Colflex® PG 76 is more resistant to temperature compared
to Asphalt PEN 60/70. Whereas in the mechanistic rheology test with the DSR tool,
Asphalt Colflex® PG 76 has better resistance to rutting criteria than Asphalt PEN
60/70 both in the original condition and in the condition after RTFOT.
The optimum asphalt content (OAC) obtained based on the VIM, Asphalt Drain
Down, and Cantabro Loss tests is 5.6% for porous asphalt mixture with Colflex®
PG-76 asphalt and 6.0% for porous asphalt mixture with PEN 60/70 asphalt. Based
on mixed performance testing, porous asphalt using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt has
the highest Marshall stability value than other mixtures, the TSR value is more than
80% which already meets the minimum value required by ASTM with ITS testing,
the best permanent deformation resistance (rutting) compared to other mixtures because the asphalt temperature resistance is much better than conventional
asphalt. Comparison of the resilient modulus value of the porous asphalt mixture
using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt and PEN 60/70 asphalt showed that the mixture
using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt had the highest resilient modulus value than the
other mixtures, although the value did not reach 1000 MPa. This is because the air
voids possessed by the porous asphalt mixture in this study are more than 20%,
which affects the durability of the porous asphalt mixture.
In general, porous asphalt mixtures using Colflex® PG 76 asphalt have the best
performance compared to porous asphalt mixtures using PEN 60/70 asphalt. This
is in accordance with the recommendations from ASTM, which is the use of
modified asphalt to improve the performance of porous asphalt mixtures |
