Description
Summary:A sense of security against criminal acts is fundamental for every human being. Crime is closely related to the spatial aspect (Kakamu, 2008; Dwidinata, 2018; Aksoy, 2017). Aspects of spatial understanding and exposure to crime are urgently needed to analyze the crime phenomenon in urban areas so that appropriate policies and programs can be determined related to crime prevention in each place. Makassar City is one of the cities with a high crime rate in Indonesia. Studies on crime patterns in Makassar City still need to be more extensive. Therefore, this study aims to reveal patterns of crime in Makassar City. This research is descriptive-explanatory with a concurrent approach or a mixture of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The data used in this research is secondary data collected through literature studies, agency data collection, and data scraping via Google Chrome. The pattern of crime is reviewed from the distribution, time of occurrence, and factors that significantly influence crime. The criminal acts considered in this study include theft by force, theft by weighting, ordinary theft, murder, threats, assault, beatings, theft of sharp weapons, and immoral acts. The factors studied included population density, building density, slum areas, presence of police posts, presence of bars, the proportion of young people, population isolation, religious heterogeneity, divorce rate, the proportion of activations, road connectivity, road integration, and spatial visibility. The methods used in this research include literature study, spatial analysis, spatial regression analysis, and hotspot analysis. This study found that Makassar City is more prone to crime at night and is dominant in public spaces. Most crimes occurred in the southern and western parts of Makassar City, with cases of abuse and theft. This study also found several spatial factors significantly influencing crime in Makassar City.
