Summary: | Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the world’s most common silicon based organic
polymer. Physical structure of PDMS that generally produced, beside fluid, is emulsion.
Its applications range from anti-foam agents to textile enhancing. For all of its
applications, droplets size are directly associated to the performance of PDMS product.
The decrease of average size of PDMS emulsions will increase the performance of
PDMS product. The succeed of getting PDMS micro emulsion in some research leads to
another research to get PDMS nano emulsions.
An aim of this research is to get the effect of cosurfactant aminoethanol (TEA) to
production of PDMS nano emulsion. Contribution of this research is to get PDMS nano
emulsion. This research is done by emulsion polymerization of D4
(octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane) or D5 (decamethylcyclopentasiloxane) with KOH
(potassium hydroxide) as an initiator. The used surfactant are polioxyethylene
nonylphenol ether (NP=40), polyoxyethylene (EO=15) lauryl ether (AEO-15),
polyoxyetylene (EO=25) stearyl ether (PPJ-O).The continues phase is water with
addition of triethanolamine (TEA) and aminoethanol (AE). A variation of the research
is concentrations of TEA.
Addition of cosurfactant TEA can increase the conversions of monomer D4 and also
increase the transparency of PDMS polymer emulsion. At [TEA] = 78,4 gr/L and [TEA]
= 195,12 gr/L, the conversion value can reach to 73,09% and 84,24%. Afterall, addition
of [TEA] = 78,4 gr/L gives transparency values to 13,21% and 20,89%, meanwhile
addition of [TEA] = 195,12 gr/L gives transparency values to 70,79% and 88,61%. At
[AE] = 195,12 gr/L gives conversion and transparency values to 31,40% and 9,87%. |
