Description
Summary:An increase in electricity consumption in an industrial area will require adequate power supply expansion. The planned power supply must not only be reliable in guaranteeing flow to consumers but must also be economical. Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) forecasts that the peak load will be in 2030. The Sumatra system, which has high power reserves, can be used as a power supply to PHR. Due to the different operating frequencies, a frequency converter is needed to distribute power from Sumatera. Converters based on power electronics are vulnerable, so they need an in-depth evaluation to ensure the reliability of the electricity supply. An optimal placement position of the power supply will assure safe power flow. Apart from the converter, there is also an option to use the gas engine as a new power supply at PHR. The two alternative solutions are compared in power flow, stability, reliability, and cost parameter. The amount and capacity will follow the results of the Generation Expansion Planning. Optimal placement of both converters and PLTMG is conducted with the brute force method, considering static and dynamic security. The reliability of the PLTMG is slightly better, but the reliability of the converter still meets specifications. The study shows that the converter is better in power supply, capability, stability, and cost. Converters are considered the preferable solution for new power supply in PHR.
