safety of the cream. The aim of this research is to formulate cream containing octyl
methoxycinnamat with different kinds of oil as cream base and compare its' stability and safety.
The creams were formulated using oil, Crill 4 and Crillet 4 as emulsifiers, cetyl alcohol as
thickening agent and propylene glycol. Three different oils used in the formula were liquid
paraffin, olive oil and castor oil. Evaluation of the cream included, type of the emulsion,
homogeneity, pH, and viscosity. The physical stability of the cream was determined by
centrifugation, freeze-thaw method and its stability during two months at
40 oC using climatic chamber. The safety use of the creams was evaluated by irritation test
on rabbits' skin. The three types of cream showed a water in oil emulsions type, with a viscosity
range between 100 x 103 - 280 x 103 cP, and pH range between 5.5 - 7. The cream consist of olive
oil and castor oil were stable for five hours of centrifugation at 3750 rpm, six cycles of
freeze-thaw, and 49 days at 40 oC, while the liquid paraffin cream was unstable after 2.5 hours of
centrifugation and after two cycles of freeze-thaw. Those creams, i.e., liquid paraffin, olive
oil and castor oil creams, showed mild irritation effect on rabbits' skin with primary irritation indexes of 0.42; 0.25; and 0.33 respectively.
