Based on the health reports conducted by Ministry of Health, prevalence of mental health in Indonesia rose significantly over the last five years, with Bandung having one of the highest number of mental health patients among other cities in West Java. Every mental health disease comes with different types of medical diagnosis, one being aggressivity. Aggressive behavior within mental health patients takes up about 12% of total patients in hospitals around Bandung and it’s care requires inpatient rehabiliation. However, this type of care is only provided by two hospitals in Bandung, which causes Bandung to have the third lowest treatment percentage among other cities in West Java. In Indonesia, mental health treatment mainly focuses on pharmacotherapy and psychosocial therapy, which are quite effective for handling biological and physiological stress, but ineffective for handling social and environmental stress. Based on that problem, the mitigation of aggressiveness, embodiment of holistic healing, as well as creating a safe environment for the staff and visitors are three main issues that need to be tackled in this project. Responding to those issues are the main concepts which are environment free from external stressors, safety for all, and therapeutic environment. The space configuration in this project focus on hierarchy where the rooms are organized vertically based on the patients’ severity level. Patients with lowest severity are placed on ground level to provide direct access to the garden. Wood-like panels are used as an accent for the exterior as well as the interior, to create a nature-like environment. The building itself consists of two masses, each four storeys high, which are connected by a service area and corridors for patients and staff. text
