Description
Summary:Hydrogenolysis of furfural (FALD) produces 1,2-pentanadiol (1,2-PeD). 1,2-PeD finds applications as antimicrobial agents in cosmetics and disinfectants. FALD is a compound derived from biomass that has the potential to generate high value chemicals. Conventionally, high pressure hydrogen is used in the FALD hydrogenolysis, which is relatively cumbersome and expensive. Therefore, hydrogenolysis in the absence of pressurized hydrogen is an attractive process. The conversion of FALD to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and 1,2-PeD through the hydrogen transfer of 2-propanol was observed to work with vanadyl@UiO-66. Herein, vanadyl@UiO-66 converted > 99% FALD to 66% FOL and 25% 1,2-PeD at 160 °C, 7 h in 2-propanol. Vanadyl@UiO-66 was easily regenerated up to 80% with the second conversion of 83%. Although the yield of 1,2-PeD was relatively low, this study has provided a new synthetic route to 1,2-PeD from direct hydrogenolysis of FALD using vanadium@MOF
