STUDY OF TSUNAMI WAVES GENERATED BY LANDSLIDE MOVEMENTS ON A FLAT BOTTOM

Disasters like tsunamis are typically triggered by tectonic earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. Tsunami waves can hit the coast with enormous energy, causing great damage. This study focuses on landslide-generated wave phenomena. The analytical formula of the linear dispersive model i...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/73061 Disasters like tsunamis are typically triggered by tectonic earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. Tsunami waves can hit the coast with enormous energy, causing great damage. This study focuses on landslide-generated wave phenomena. The analytical formula of the linear dispersive model is used to simulate the development of free surface waves due to bottom landslides. Various types of landslide motion over a flat bottom depth are simulated. For the case of landslides with constant velocity, simulation result after a long observation time, landslides with the same area would generate the same leading wave; and this follows the far-field leading wave theory. Next, the effect of the wave dispersion on the resulting wave pattern is investigated. Simulation results for a relatively large water depth show that as time increases, due to the somewhat large dispersion effect, the resulting surface waves would disperse, so that the leading wave amplitude reduces. Finally, for the case of landslides moving with constant acceleration, similar observations are found; various forms of landslides with the same enclosed area would produce almost the same leading wave, which was observed after a somewhat long simulation time. text
