DHZ and its derivatives have a wide range of bioactivities including antioxidant, anticancer, antimalarial, antidepressant, antifungal, and many more. DHZ can synthesize from vanillin and acetone by aldol cross- condensation (Claisen-Schmidt), but its conventional synthesis method requires 24- 48 hours and produces a low proportion of yields. Aspects of green chemistry such as atom economy and low energy factors are important aspects to be considered for DHZ synthesis. In this study, the synthesis of DHZ from vanillin and acetone in 1-decyl-3-methyllimidazolium bromide ([DMIM]Br) ionic liquid medium was carried out using the Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis (MAOS) method as a synthesis method that fulfill green chemistry aspects. The concentration of ionic liquid [DMIM]Br was varied to obtain the optimal concentration of ionic liquid [DMIM]Br. A bright yellow solid product of DHZ with 62,96% yield was synthesized from vanillin and acetone (1:10, mol/mol) in 2.5 M NaOH and 5% [DMIM]Br of total mol reactant using MAOS for 120 minutes (50oC, 300 W) in 62,96% yield with a melting point range of 129-130oC. Product characterization was carried out using melting point tests, TLC, FTIR, and 500 MHz (1H) and 125 MHz (13C) NMR instrumentation. The results of this study used as material for the development of inquiry-based Student Worksheets on Green Chemistry material for high school/equivalent students. The learning trial was conducted on 31 respondents from 10th grade Al-Ma'soem Bandung High School. The results of data processing showed that the developed inquiry-based Student Worksheet obtained a student assessment response of 78.29% which was classified as good. text
