INTERTWINING URBAN-NATURE: SENAYAN PARK WETLAND CENTER

The attachment of urban residents to the natural life around them is getting further and further away. Within a short period of time, humans have experienced a transition from a life that was mostly spent outside to a very different life that was mostly spent inside buildings and in urban contexts....

Within a short period of time, humans have experienced a transition from a life that was mostly spent outside to a very different life that was mostly spent inside buildings and in urban contexts. The three main problems discussed are urban residents’ high level of stress, built environment including its architecture system is usually separated from natural processes that is happening around it, and the last one is the loss of flora and fauna which will result in decreased biodiversity and ecosystem imbalance. The absence of nature in cities can lead to the main problem faced by urban residents, The absence of chances for urban residents to interact with nature may lead to ‘extinction of experience’ and could affect natural damage beyond cities. This project is located on the site of Senayan Park Mall, Central Jakarta which has an area of 10 ha. The site developed for the project has an area of 9687 m². The function of the architecture to be built is as a Natural Lifestyle Center, which primarily combines the daily activities of city people with nature in an urban context (intertwining urban-nature). The choice of location mainly considers the natural potential of the land, which are the existence of existing wetlands, surrounded by urban forests, and the presence of habitat for several types of avifauna in urban forests. Besides that, the strategic location in the middle of city life is easily accessible by city people in their daily life. The design basis for answering the vision and mission uses Ecological Design with three levels, Biophilic, Biomimetic, and Nature Inclusive Design. The first design problem is the everyday life of city people who are far from nature, the aim of solving the problem is to attract people to increase awareness of the importance of the environment, it requires integration of the presence of nature in architecture, with a Biophilic Design. The second problem is natural processes that are not visible in the city, the aim of the design is to integrate natural processes into the architectural work system with a Biomimetic design. The third problem is nature and biodiversity that has been lost in urban areas, the design goal is to bring back space for urban flora and fauna in architecture with Nature Inclusive Design. text
