Summary: | Pediatric cancer has a relatively high chance of curability in high-income countries with a 90% chance of curability, however in a low-income country such as Indonesia pediatric cancer still has high mortality rates. Children with cancer need their attention and spaces that are different from adults, as children have their characteristics according to their age and maturity. Therefore, there is an urgency to have a health facility dedicated to pediatric cancer to facilitate children with cancer. In the process of treating the patient, the family has a high rate of participation to accompany and even take care of the patient in comparison with adult patients. This high dependability of the patient on their parents means that the hospital need to take into account the need of the patient’s family that will be going along during every step of the treatment. Children are considered a moving target due to its characteristic that is always changing and growing and need a flexible room to ensure it is always compatible with their growth. Healing environment is chosen as the main concept of the design as it seeks to create a calming environment for its user. The calm and content room created through healing environment aims to reduce the pain by shifting the focus from the painful treatment to a more relaxing tone that hopefully eases the grueling amount of treatment.
The project is part of the development of Premiere Bintaro Hospital which is part of the Dime Darby Healthcare group. The new building that is designed for the development is a new pediatric cancer hospital wing inside the hospital area. This project has 4 main functions, treatment, hospital education and recreation, inpatient treatment, and outpatient. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are two of the unique treatment that a cancer hospital has as its function to combat the cancer cell. Laboratory and physiotherapy are also provided to identify the cancer type and rehabilitate patients. The project has an area of 20.786 m2 with 2 existing buildings, that is the main building and the annex wing. The main building consists of an outpatient, medical check-up, ER, laundry, nutrition, morgue, OK, VK, ICU, and outpatient with 208 beds. The annex wing consists of meeting rooms, offices, and laboratories. A new massing for a parking building is also provided to meet the demand for parking space that is taken up by the new pediatric cancer wing.
The project massing is configured as an L shape building that is connected directly to the main building and creates a healing garden in the middle between the main building, the annex wing, and the new pediatric cancer wing. The zoning of the building is arranged in a vertical stack of functions which maximizes the efficacy of staff circulation and creates a division between private, public, and treatment areas, thus creating a comfortable space for patients that is far from the treatment. The radiotherapy bunkers are placed 3 meters below ground to minimize the possibility of radiation spreading to other areas. Inpatient is put on the fourth to the seventh floor to maximize security and privacy of the patient and is provided with a rooftop garden above. The building is accentuated with wood facades that mimic a floating castle giving the narrative of children's folklore of “Jack and The Beanstalk”. This storytelling is created to make it as relatable as possible to children so that they can understand and enjoy the building through the stories of their imagination.
