COMPARISON BETWEEN ADAPTIVE AND FIXED TIME MODES OF SCATS OPERATION ALONG CIPAGANTI CORRIDOR IN BANDUNG

ABSTRACT:

This study compares the performance of existing adaptive mode of SCATS (Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System) operation with that of a fixed time coordination mode. The main objectives of the study are: 1) to set up a comparable fixed time coor...

The main objectives of the study are: 1) to set up a comparable fixed time coordination with the TRANSYT/9 program; 2) to compare performance of existing adaptive mode with that of the fixed time mode; 3) to observe factors which influence the effectiveness of SCATS operation.

The principal parameters for comparison are travel times between intersections, and throughput of individual and all intersections along a corridor with the following characteristics: 1) one way traffic stream; 2)two phase traffic signal operations; 3)low side friction along the corridor .

The study site was the Jalan Cipaganti corridor in Bandung comprising four intersections, i.e. with Jalan Pasteur; Jalan Eyckman; Jalan Sampurna and Jalan Lamping. Data were collected in two stages: under adaptive coordination and under fixed time coordination. For each stage, analysis was focussed on two time periods: AM peak hour (07.15-08.15) and PM peak hour (16.00-17.00)

The analysis of differences in average travel times, with a confidence level of 95%, show that there are no significant differences for link Pasteur to Eyckman, while for links Eyckman to Sampurna and Sampurna to Lamping travel times under adaptive coordination 74.9% to 243.7% greater than those under fixed time coordination.

The analysis of throughput of all intersections shows that in AM peak hour throughput of adaptive coordination is 0.5% to 18% less than that of fixed time coordination, while in PM peak hour, the throughput of adaptive coordination is 1.2% to 36.8% greater than of fixed time coordination.

Basically, the two modes of control were found to be not fully comparable because of underlying differences in system objectives. text
