ELECTRONIC TEXTILE IMPLEMENTATION ON INTERACTIVE KINETIC TEXTILE INSTALLATION THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT

Electronic textile (e-textile) is one of smart textile developments to expand the function of a textile and also increase its aesthetic value by integrating electronic components into textile’s structures or onto textile’s surfaces. In this research, electronic textile is used as an interaction media between human senses and visual elements of The Forbidden Fruit installation. The Forbidden Fruit – the visual theme and narration of this interactive installation – is inspired by The Fall of Man story in the book of Genesis. This research uses qualitative data methods by reviewing some former literature and interviewing two sources. The data that is utilized for visual exploration guidelines includes the examination of The Garden of Eden’s floral components and interaction rule in art works. The Forbidden Fruit installation is constructed of textile modules and a mechatronic system. Structure and surface design techniques are combined to produce () textile modules with the dimension of 6 cm x 13 cm. The mechatronic system includes a temperature sensor, a microprocessor, and fifty motors . Fifty out of () textile modules are attached to the motors so they have the ability to move when the sensor senses human body temperature. There are ten different movement patterns. The Forbidden Fruit installation represents the concept of causal interaction between man and cosmos. Participants represent humans – Adam and Eve – who have a free will to pursue their desire or not. The choices that are made by them are represented by the movement of entering the installation area (3 m x 3 m x 2.75 m) and touching the fruit object in the middle of the installation. Temperature sensor is integrated to the surface of this object. If the participants decide to touch it, the sensor will detect their body temperature and then fifty textile modules are going to move. The type of pattern –which represents the different consequences from one’s action– will be determined by one’s body temperature.
