Adsorption is one of the methods widely used to address dye pollution, such as methyl orange in water bodies. Low cost, eco-friendly, and easily obtainable material source which can be used as an adsorbent is carrageenan. In this study, ?-carrageenan beads were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and glutaraldehyde (GA) through impregnation. PEI interacts electrostatically with methyl orange dye, thereby increasing the adsorption capacity of ?-carrageenan beads and GA acts as a cross-linking agent that ensures polyethyleneimine reamins coated on the surface of the beads. The adsorbent was prepared by soaking ?-carrageenan beads in a 1% v/v PEI solution for 3 hours and a 1% v/v GA solution for 5 hours, then dried using freeze-dry method. Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) dan Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) spectroscopy were used to characterize modified ?-carrageenan beads with PEI and GA (?-kar/PEI/GA beads). The FTIR results showed that the ?-kar/PEI/GA beads were successfully synthesized through an optimized method. The swelling degree of the ?-kar/PEI/GA beads was obtained at 121,05%. Several parameters were tested to determine the optimum conditions for methyl orange adsorption, including the effect of pH, contact time variation, and adsorbent mass. The results showed that the adsorption of methyl orange by ?-kar/PEI/GA beads reached optimum conditions at pH 4, a contact time of 2 hours, and adsorbent mass of 0,075 grams. The adsorption of methyl orange by ?-kar/PEI/GA beads followed a pseudo second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamic study of methyl orange adsorption showed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic, as indicated by the values of ?G at temperatures of 30, 40, and 50 °C, which were ?15,85, ?17,76, and ?19,67 kJ.mol?1, respectively, as well as the values of ?H and ?S at 42,02 kJ.mol?1 and 190,99 J.K?1.mol?1, respectively. text |
