METHYLENE BLUE ADSORPTION ON FLOATING ?-CARRAGEENAN BEADS
Methylene blue is a dye that is widely used in various industries but has a negative impact on the environment. The aim of this study is to reduce the impact of methylene blue pollution on the water environment. ?-carrageenan is one of the adsorbents that can be used for methylene blue adsorption. I...

The aim of this study is to reduce the impact of methylene blue pollution on the water environment. ?-carrageenan is one of the adsorbents that can be used for methylene blue adsorption. In this study, food grade based ?-carrageenan was synthesized as methylene blue adsorbent. Adsorbents that have floating properties will simplify the separation process after contact. Adsorbent characterization was carried out by conducting swelling degree test, floating test, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Optimum conditions were observed in various variations of pH, adsorbent mass, contact time, and initial concentration of methylene blue. Optimum adsorption was obtained at pH 3 with an initial concentration of methylene blue of 100 mg L?1 and an adsorbent mass of 0.1 gram with a contact time of 120 minutes. Methylene blue adsorption using ?-carrageenan spheres followed the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model with an R2 value of 0.9921. The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue using ?-carrageenan beads followed a pseudo second-order model with an R2 value of 0.9859. The thermodynamics of methylene blue adsorption using ?-carrageenan beads shows that the adsorption is a spontaneous and an exothermic process as indicated by the ?G values of ?16.52 (303 K), ?15.82 (313 K), ?15.13 (323 K) kJ.mol?1 with ?H and ?S values of ?37.54 kJ.mol?1 and ?69.37 J.K ?1 .mol?1 , respectively. text |
