Summary: | Mentawai Tattoos (Titi) are the cultural heritage of the Mentawai tribe, which play a role
as a social identity in society. The existence of Titi began to fade after the prohibition of
adhering to the local belief in arat sabulungan in 1954. The community had to choose a
religion between Islam or Protestant Christianity, referring to the "Three Religions
Meeting," which was held at that time and prohibited from carrying out traditional
activities, including using tattoos. Over time, Titi's existence started reappearing in society
through several tattoo makers covered by the media. However, not all Indonesian people
know about Titi as the original Mentawai cultural heritage, which had a tragic history. The
existence of Titi Mentawai is currently not fully recovered and can continue to be preserved
by the community. Without updates, Titi Mentawai may return to a dark past. Titi motifs,
as part of the cultural heritage of the Mentawai tribe, can be developed in the textile sector
through techniques and fashion products. Preserving the Titi Mentawai motif can be
applied using written batik techniques on a piece of cloth with the visual adaptation design
method. Visual adaptation is commonly applied to textile products inspired by previous
motifs. Titi motifs obtained from previous research data are applied with a visual
adaptation design method adjusted to the pattern and needs of fashion design. The
exploration of titi motifs on fashion products is also applied using different colors, namely
black-and-white and black-red. Through this research, it was found that the application of
Titi Mentawai motifs with written batik techniques on fashion products can be an
alternative medium for preserving the culture of the Mentawai tribe. The black-and-white
application to the cloth looks more evident than the black-red color, which resembles the
motif and the base color.
