Summary: | Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU) remains a poorly managed complication of diabetes in Indonesia,
with a high prevalence of 19.47 million cases in 2021 and 40% to 80% risk among individuals
with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). This is concerning as DFU can lead to amputation and even death,
with amputation rates at 16% and mortality rates at 25% in Indonesia. The associated medical
expenses are also substantial, ranging from 200 thousand rupiahs for wound care to 130-150
million rupiahs for amputation costs. While debridement using antibiotics is a common approach,
the emergence of antibiotic resistance in chronic wounds has posed challenges since the late
1990s. To address these issues, a cost-effective and efficient solution is needed. Maggot
Debridement Therapy (MDT) has been recognized as an alternative treatment for chronic wounds,
utilizing live maggots as therapeutic agents. The use of maggots for wound healing dates back to
1557 and has demonstrated effectiveness in various countries, including Europe, America, and
some Asian countries. However, MDT has yet to be implemented in Indonesia due to the
unavailability of sterile maggots and the existing social stigma associated with maggot therapy.
Hence, the objective of this final project is to design integrated maggot breeding products with
sterilization features and develop supportive products for MDT application, aiming to facilitate
the practical implementation of MDT in Indonesia.
