Summary: | One of the strategic national programs initiated by the Indonesian government relates to food
security. Food security is an important agenda as the population growth in Indonesia must be
accompanied by increased domestic production. Food diversification is necessary to meet the
food demands, and one of the potential sources is the development of umbi porang cultivation.
Porang plants (Amorphophallus oncophyllus Prain) are synonymous with Amorphophallus
muelleri Blume and Amorphophallus blumei Scott (Sumarwoto, 2005). Porang has been
identified as one of the supported commodities by the Directorate General of Food Crops
according to the Strategic Plan of the Directorate General of Food Crops 2020-2024. Porang
has technological and commercial potential in various industries, including food,
pharmaceuticals, livestock, medical, and energy industries. As an agrarian country, Indonesia
has a significant amount of untapped land that can be utilized optimally for porang cultivation.
Further studies are needed to assess the cultivation prospects of porang and explore the
development and processing opportunities in Indonesia, in order to estimate the economic
potential of porang cultivation.
This research aims to analyse the economic potential of umbi porang through an analytical
model using data on the cost elements of porang cultivation, land availability, harvesting
levels, and investment analysis using the Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The research method
includes data collection from relevant sources such as porang farmers, previous studies, and
related literature. The collected data include the costs involved in porang cultivation, available
land, achieved harvest levels, and other relevant data for investment analysis. The research
also considers several scenarios of changes in key factors that affect porang cultivation, such
as changes in porang and katak selling prices and harvest success rate.
Based on the conducted scenarios, it was found that the most profitable cultivation occurs when
the selling price of umbi is Rp 5,000.00 and katak are Rp 50,000.00, with a maintained 100%
success rate. Decreased success rate, as well as price reduction, significantly impact the IRR
magnitude compared to a constant price scenario.
The results of this research are expected to provide a deeper understanding of the economic
and financial aspects of porang cultivation. The designed analytical model can serve as a
useful tool in decision-making for farmers, investors, and stakeholders. Furthermore, this study
contributes to the development of knowledge on porang cultivation in Indonesia and provides
policy recommendations based on robust and valid data analysis.
