description |
Khmer Basin is located on the offshore of Cambodia. The basin has a very
complex structural setting; however, the basin is potentially high for hydrocarbon
generation. A large number of subsurface data acquisitions have been completed;
those are 2D seismic and several drilling. Eight wells were drilled and five of
them are proven to have hydrocarbon content. The hydrocarbon discovery
represents Khmer Basin as an excellent area for exploration. Unfortunately,
detailed discussion regarding the Khmer Basin for further hydrocarbon
exploration and exploitation was still on debate these days. The discussion
includes questions regarding the successful and failure of hydrocarbon discovery
on a drilling program in the Khmer area.
The research area covers the Khmer Basin and eastern Khmer ridge. Two
dimensional subsurface and drilling data are used to explain the basin
development mechanism and its implication on hydrocarbon exploration.
Research phase includes the regional and tectonic study; determine structural
pattern, stratigraphical layer and sedimentation distribution on every sequence by
creating depth structure map and isopach, cross section reconstruction and basin
modeling. By studying the thickening and thinning sequence from the isopach
map and seismic analysis and flattening then the basin geometry and the existence
of structural influence can be describe. Afterward, the regional regime affecting
the research area will easily be recognized.
Khmer Basin is a Tertiary Basin. Ten horizons were interpreted on the seismic
data. Structural pattern on the research area is mostly on north-south trending,
produced from an extensional regime as the aftermath of a pull-apart influence by
strike-slip movement.
Basin evolution was marked by several stages; they are pre-rift (basement interval
or S-0), syn-rift (S I and S II interval), and post-rift (S III, S IV, S V, S VI, S VII,
S VIII, and S IX).
Based on well drilling and seismic interpretation, hydrocarbon potential such as
the source rock identification, reservoir, closure and trap were recognize. From
the cross section reconstruction and basin modeling analysis, hydrocarbon
accumulations were affected by hydrocarbon migration and structural
development (hydrocarbon trap). |
