The term durability refers to the resistance of a bituminous mixture to disintegration under traffic loads and weathering. Weathering includes the influence of water, in any form, which together with temperature and time reduces the durability. To date, studies of durability assessment have generally been performed to gain information on the resistance of mixtures to the influence of water, especially in fluid form. In this study, a different method of durability assessment was developed, i.e. to investigate the influence of water vapour on the durability. <br />

Evaluation of the new method was based on the Marshall Index of Retained Stability and the durability index. The results show that the index of retained stability after the water vapour test follows a pattern of durability which is similar to that of the immersion. However, the difference in index of retained strength between maximum and minimum values is more significant for the water vapour test than that for the immersion test. This is an indication that the procedure is sufficiently severe and the apparatus of the cyclic water vapour test can be used for durability tests on bituminous mixtures. |
