Description
Summary:Abstract :

One approach in studying the tectonic setting of an area is by determining the deformation parameters, those are translation, rotation, and changing of a geometric shape. Geodetical approach, known as geometric method, were carried out by measuring the difference of the coordinates of some points at a certain period of time and decomposed them into parameters of deformation by using mathematical inversion.

GPS technology, which have many advantages in comparison with the classical method of geodesy, was used in many researchers for examining the crustal movement system. Bakosurtanal cooperates with several universities in Japan, USA and Indonesia since 1989, has done some measurement along the Sumateran Fault System (SFS). The aim of the measurement was t o study the system it self and the properties of the oblique subduction of the Indo-Australian plate beneath the Eurasian plate.

This thesis discussed a small part of the SFS, i.e. Nias Island and the Sumatera West Coast, an area of 200 km x 200 km. The rigid body displacement model and the strain model were used as the approach model for mathematical inversion calculation. Some strategies which were exercised in the calculation were (1) making a network of triangle, (2) involving all the points, (3) dividing the area into two separated blocks and (4) dividing the area into two blocks with fixing them to other block.
