ANTIHYPERTENSIVE ACTIVITY OF CHINESE PETAI (LEUCAENA LEUCOCEPHALA) SEED ETHANOL EXTRACT IN MALE WISTAR RATS INDUCED WITH DEXAMETHASONE

Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease that causes premature death worldwide. Hypertensive patients certainly need antihypertensive drugs for their whole life. Conventional antihypertensive medicine have side effects and require a lot of money. In traditional usage, Leucaena leucocephala seed...

Hypertensive patients certainly need antihypertensive drugs for their whole life. Conventional antihypertensive medicine have side effects and require a lot of money. In traditional usage, Leucaena leucocephala seeds are used to treat hypertension. In vitro, Leucaena leucocephala seed extract act as an Angiontensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor (ACEI). Leucaena leucocephala seeds contain flavonoids that can lower blood pressure. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract from Leucaena leucocephala seeds on male Wistar rats’ systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Animals were induced with dexamethasone 0,5 mg/kg body weight subcutaneously. The effectiveness of Leucaena leucocephala seed extract in lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure was determined based on systolic and diastolic blood pressure parameters. It was measured noninvasively with the CODA tail-cuff blood pressure system. Blood pressure was measued before and after induction and during therapy (therapy on days 1, 3, 5, and 7). There was a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p <0.05) in the group given Leucaena leucocephala seed extract 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight starting day five therapy. Thus, Leucaena leucocephala seeds showed antihypertensive effects in dexamethasone-induced hypertensive rat models. text
