STUDY ON MODELLING OF CONFINED MASONRY WALLS IN INDONESIA

A confined masonry structure is a building consisting of masonry and reinforced concrete tie elements on all four sides of the panels. The dominant type of simple houses and schools in Indonesia belong to the confined masonry structure. Many buildings with confined masonry structures in Indonesia...

The dominant type of simple houses and schools in Indonesia belong to the confined masonry structure. Many buildings with confined masonry structures in Indonesia have collapsed and been damaged by earthquakes. If these confined masonry structures are well constructed in terms of construction methods and materials, the buildings will have good structural performance in restricting earthquakes. This paper presents the modelling of a confined masonry wall structure using pushover analysis. In this analysis, the tie elements, namely columns and beams, are modelled as reinforced concrete frames. The masonry walls are modelled as diagonal strut elements. Various combinations of modelling were compared with a database of test results in Indonesia. From the 15 specimens of confined masonry wall panels (3000x3000) mm without openings collected, pushover analyses were performed on 13 specimens. Based on the modelling, it was found that the calculation of diagonal strut width using the Equivalent Truss Model (ETM) of Rankawat et al. (2018) combined with the backbone curve model of Riahi et al. (2009) has a fairly good model prediction. The model can predict the stiffness and maximum strength quite close to the test database in Indonesia. However, the ETMRiahi model is not predicting the displacement well. text
