One of the determining factors for growth performance, waste bioconversion parameters, and proximate content is the type of rearing substrate used. This study aims to determine growth performance, bioconversion ability of Hermetia illucens larvae, and proximate content of Hermetia illucens larvae on vegetable rearing substrates and cow blood cosubstrate. Growth performance is measured from the parameters of growth rate, life period, and survival rate. Meanwhile, the bioconversion ability of Hermetia illucens larvae was measured by the parameters of the Waste Reduction Index (WRI), Approximate Digestability (AD), and Efficiency Conversion of Digested Feed (ECD). Vegetable substrate and cow blood cosubstrate were given to Hermetia illucens larvae aged 6 days or instar-I phase with cow blood waste treatment of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% and poultry feed as control treatment. Feeding was carried out every three days with a feeding rate of 100 mg/larvae/day. The results showed that the fastest growth rates in length, biomass, and life period were achieved in the 5% cow blood treatment of 0.83 mm/day, 7.62 mg/day, and a life period of 56 days. While the 10% cow blood treatment resulted in the highest survival rate reaching 89.2 ± 1.92%. The WRI parameter provides information on how much substrate is reduced by Hermetia illucens larvae. The best WRI was shown by 5% cow blood treatment of 3.21 ± 0.35%. The AD parameter represents the amount of substrate that was successfully assimilated by Hermetia illucens larvae. The best AD was produced by 15% cow blood treatment of 75.33 ± 3.35%. The ECD indicates the efficiency of the larvae in converting the substrate into body biomass. The highest ECD was shown by 5% cow blood treatment of 29.01 ± 4.93%. Proximate test results for larvae treated with 10% cow blood yielded a moisture content of 84.62%, ash 23.02%, protein 42.23%, carbohydrate 20.64%, fat 10.78% and fiber 3.33%. When compared with the literature, there was an increase in protein content in Hermetia illucens larvae of 21.54% from 20.69% to 42.23%. text |
