STANDARDIZATION OF PATCHOULI LEAF ESSENTIAL OIL (POGOSTEMON CABLIN (BLANCO) BENTH.) AND ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY AGAINST MALASSEZIA FURFUR AND CANDIDA ALBICANS FUNGI THAT CAUSE DANDRUFF

Dandruff is a scalp disorder characterized by excessive exfoliation of dead skin accompanied by itching and even cause redness and irritation. A fungal infection causes this disorder. Natural material can be used as a dandruff treatment, one of them using patchouli leaf essential oil (Pogostem...

A fungal infection causes this disorder. Natural material can be used as a dandruff treatment, one of them using patchouli leaf essential oil (Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth.), which has antifungal properties. This study aimed to standardize patchouli leaf essential oil and to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC), and the content of compounds in patchouli leaf essential oil that responsible to inhibit the growth of fungi that cause dandruff, (Malassezia furfur and Candida albicans). Standardization was done by determining color, specific gravity, refractive index, solubility in ethanol, acid number, ester number, optical rotation, and analysis of essential oil content using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Antifungal activity were determined qualitatively and quantitatively, using disc diffusion test, while Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined by microdilution test, Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC), and TLC-bioautography test. Based on standardization results, the quality of patchouli leaf essential oil fulfilled the criteria so that it can be used as an antifungal agent with contained patchouli alcohol was 31,568%. The activity of patchouli leaf essential oil with concentrations of 3,125% - 100% gave inhibition diameters on Malassezia furfur ATCC 14521. The value of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of patchouli leaf essential oil against Malassezia furfur was 970 ?g/mL, and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) value was 3900 ?g/mL. The content of antifungal compounds in patchouli leaf essential oil, which inhibited the growth of fungi that cause dandruff with an Rf value was 0.35 belongs to the sesquiterpene group. text
