Summary: | Androgenetic alopecia occurs due to the activity of androgen hormones which is testosterone.
Testosterone in hair follicles is converted into 5?-DHT by 5?-reductase type II enzyme which results
in a shortened anagen phase and miniaturization of hair follicles. Almonds contain fatty acids that
act as type II 5?-reductase inhibitors. Centella asiatica contains the main triterpenoid compounds
namely asiaticoside, asiatic acid and other compounds such as flavonoids namely kaemferol,
quercetin which is used in overcoming hair loss and baldness. This study aimed to evaluate the
effectiveness of almon oil and the combination of almond oil and Centella asiatica leaves in
promoting hair growth on mice model of androgenetic alopecia. Hair tonic formulated into
nanoemulsions to promote the penetration of hair growth active ingredientsinto the dermal papilla
so that the process of cell proliferation and hair growth becomes faster. Furthermore, formulation,
optimization, evaluation of preparations (organoleptic, pH) and stability tests (freeze-thaw) were
carried out. The best formula of almond oil nanoemulsion was obtained using a combination of
Tween 80 and PEG 400 with a ratio of 1:1 and a total surfactant of 30% resulting in a globular size
of 198.60 ± 18.78 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.43 ± 0.05, and a pH of 5.20 ± 0.02. While the best
formula of almond oil and Centella asiatica leaves ethanol extract nanoemulsion uses a combination
of Tween 80 and PEG 400 with a ratio of 1: 1 and a total surfactant of 25% which results in globular
size of 96.67 ± 20.52 nm, polydispersity index of 0.49 ± 0.09, and pH 5.03 ± 0.06. The preparation
was tested for acute irritation in albino rabbits and did not cause erythema or udema. Based on
statistical tests of hair length and hair weight, all hair tonic preparations produced a significant
difference (p<0.05) when compared to positive controls. Centella asiatica leaves ethanol extract
showed the longest hair growth with an average of 6.22 mm. Almond nanoemulsion showed the
highest hair weight with an average of 27.33 mg. This indicates that a single preparation of almond
oil and Centella asiatica leaves ethanol extract provides better hair growth activity when compared
to the combination. In addition, pegagan ethanol extract preparations and almond nanoemulsions
have equivalent effects (P>0.05) with minoxidil as a standard drug.
