Description
Summary:The study of the leaves of Guazuma ulmifolia had been carried out. The powdered leaves were extracted continuously with petroleum ether, chloroform and ethanol respectively. The petroleum ether extract was evaporated, the residue was saponified and the unsponifiable materials were chromatographed over silica gel column. The fractions were crystallized and the crystal obtained was identified as B-sitosterol by ultraviolet, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. The ethanol extract was evaporated and the residue was dissolved in water. The separation of flavonoids and phenolic acids had been done by liquid-liquid extraction. The flavonoids were identified by paper chromatography and ultraviolet spectrophotometry as luteolin and 5,7-dihydroxyisoflavon. The phenolic acids were identified by paper chromatography and confirmed by direct comparison with authentic samples as caffeic acid, ferulic acid, vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-coumaric acid. The carotenoid was isolated by liquid-liquidextraction. It was identified as B-carotene by thin layer chromatography, ultraviolet spectrophotometry and chemical reactions compared with literature data. <br />
