STUDY OF NON-PHYSICAL WASTE IN CONSTRUCTION IN INDONESIA: LITERATURE REVIEW AND IDENTIFICATION OF CONTRACTOR'S UNDERSTANDING
Non-physical waste directly impacts construction projects' ability to meet key performance indicators (KPIs) such as cost, quality, time, and productivity. Identifying and minimizing waste in the construction process is one of the principles of lean construction. However, construction professio...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/74238 Non-physical waste directly impacts construction projects' ability to meet key performance indicators (KPIs) such as cost, quality, time, and productivity. Identifying and minimizing waste in the construction process is one of the principles of lean construction. However, construction professionals currently tend to define construction waste only as material waste. Additionally, the understanding of state-owned contractors who have implemented lean construction regarding non-physical waste is still unknown. Therefore, a literature review is needed to define, identify types, and describe the characteristics of non-physical waste, as well as to analyze the understanding of contractors regarding non-physical waste. This study aims to identify the definition, types, and characteristics of non-physical waste in the context of construction, and to determine the extent of understanding among contractors in Indonesia regarding non-physical waste. Data was collected through a systematic literature review, interviews, and questionnaires administered to state-owned contractors in Indonesia who have implemented lean construction. The results of the literature review were then compared with the results of the interviews and questionnaires to analyze the understanding of contractors regarding non-physical waste in Indonesia. Based on the data and analysis, non-physical waste is defined as the utilization of resources that does not add value, from both the customer and the construction service provider's perspectives. There are nine major groups of non-physical waste that can be characterized based on form/incidence, causes, TFV analysis, and associated resources. The research findings indicate that the understanding among contractors in Indonesia regarding non-physical waste reached the evaluation level, with understanding levels of 72% for knowledge, 71% for application, 71% for analysis, and 71% for evaluation. This indicates that there is still room for improvement in understanding. The practice of monitoring non-physical waste is not well-documented and structured, and there is a lack of specific quantitative measurements. Additionally, the results of the questionnaires and interviews show that contractors in Indonesia have different interpretations of non-physical waste. Inconsistency, uneven understanding among workers, and resistance to lean construction culture are also constraints in improving the understanding of contractors regarding non-physical waste. text |
