ANALYSIS OF POTENTIAL RISK OF NICKEL HEAVY METAL EXPOSURE TO WORKERS’ HEALTH IN SEVERAL PAINT INDUSTRIES

The paint industry is an industry that uses heavy metals as raw materials, one of which is nickel (Ni). Ni heavy metal exposure to paint industry workers must be watched out for because high exposure concentrations can endanger workers’ health. This study aims to analyze Ni heavy metal exposur...

Ni heavy metal exposure to paint industry workers must be watched out for because high exposure concentrations can endanger workers’ health. This study aims to analyze Ni heavy metal exposure through inhalation and dermal routes to workers in several paint industries in Indonesia. Nickel heavy metal sampling in both exposure pathways was conducted based on NIOSH document 7702 issue 1 and then analyzed by X-Ray Fluorescence method. Ni heavy metal exposure was evaluated to obtain the exposure concentration (EC) value through inhalation and average daily dose (ADD) through dermal in paint industry workers. External factors affecting the Ni exposure value of paint industry workers were analyzed using KruskalWallis tests. The test results show that the origin of the industry affects the Ni concentration values received by workers every day through inhalation and dermal routes. Risk management is needed to reduce the risk of heavy metal exposure received by workers, such as substituting basic production materials, improvement of workspace conditions, use of PPE, health monitoring, and training on occupational health and safety. text
