Summary:Public open spaces that are used for physical exercises are important both socially and physically. Ironically, free public open space are lack, and tend to decline. Meanwhile, there is no design principles for open spaces with the main function for physical exercises in Bandung. This research is intended to formulate design principles of public open spaces for physical exercises in Bandung with regard to the typology, normative design principles, and user’s perceptions and preferences. The research is a descriptive-explorative research with different type of spaces but at the same time in obtaining data. In exploring the problems, questionnaires were used to obtain the user’s perceptions and preferences. Data was processed with descriptive statistic analysis. To simplify data collection, the research conducted in Bandung, focusing on public open spaces for physical exercises. Findings show that design principles of public open spaces should consider accommodation of several kinds of exercises, multifunction land use, good accessibility and linkage, and compatible infrastructures that satisfy the user needs.
