Summary: | Food waste is a type of organic waste that has not been treated properly. Various
alternative solutions have been proposed to solve the problems related to food waste,
one of which is by using a natural approach. According to research done by experts,
the black soldier fly (BSF) larvae has the ability to decompose food waste without
harmful side effects which could pose danger to the environment. Moreover, the BSF
larvae can also be used as animal feed with high protein content.
Al Umanaa Islamic Boarding School is an educational institution located in Sukabumi
Regency, West Java. The Al Umanaa Sejahtera Mandiri Cooperative (Kasma) is an
independent business entity specialized in providing the needs of the residents of Al
Umanaa Islamic Boarding School. Kasma Tani, one of Kasma’s business unit engaged
in agriculture and animal husbandry is interested in developing an integrated
agricultural system, wiht the principles of a circular economy. In the designed system,
BSF larvae is used as an alternative organic feed for laying hens and catfish, as well
as decomposing food waste from Al Umanaa Islamic Boarding School.
As the first step, business and conceptual model are constructed to portray the
interactions between components in the integrated agricultural system. Next, an
analysis of the techincal conditions and financial feasibility is conducted. From the
results of the analysis, a number of scenario is tested with various initial capital of
BSF eggs. It is found that an integrated agricultural system with minimum capital of
350 grams of BSF eggs performs better financially than the existing conventional
agricultural system, with 29,39% internal rate of return (IRR) and 3,25 years of
discounted payback period (DPP).
