Total lost circulation is a condition where whole drilling fluid enters the formation so that there is no return to surface. Total lost circulation can occur when drilling process penetrates vuggy, cavernous, or large naturally fractures formation. This kind of formation usually can be found in calcareous carbonate or limestone.
It is nearly impossible to drill the formation with conventional method such as sealing the void space with LCM or cement plug because of its large void space of the rock. In order to drill the formation successfully and economically, non-conventional drilling method is needed.
This final project will discuss one of the non-conventional drilling method that is used to drill total lost zone in X-1 well. The method that is used is blind drilling or drilling without return. This method tolerates lost circulation to happen. Drilling fluid is injected continuously without return to surface. Therefore, drilling fluid that is used for this method must be in massive volume and easy to get.
Problems were occurred during drilling through this zone. Those problems are pipe sticking and drill string vibration. Well control was not the main concern because this total lost zone is a subpressure zone.
