Although weaving is still preserved today, some motifs in Sumba ikat weaving have become extinct, including geometric motifs. This is due to the lack of production of those motifs with innovative designs that are relevant to the modern era. Therefore, the author has designed a graphic experimentation through visual exploration of habak ornaments, which are geometric motifs from East Sumba ikat weaving. The graphic experimentation aims to achieve a contemporary, experimental, and applicable visual outcome. The design process begins with analyzing and selecting ornaments, exploring visual variations of the ornaments, and experimenting with ornament forms to generate graphic elements that can be implemented across various design mediasin a visual identity. The design methodology involves data collection through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and literature studies. This design is expected to renew the motifs in graphic form, thus extending the lifespan of endangered Sumba ikat motifs, broadening readers' understanding of the diverse range of decorative motifs in East Sumba ikat weaving, and inspiring designers or weavers to develop East Sumba ikat motifs through exploratory approaches. text |
