CHARACTERIZATION OF KALIMANTAN TROPICAL FOREST PLANT SPECIES AS A DATABASE FOR DEVELOPMENT IKN NUSANTARA BOTANICAL GARDEN
The IKN Nusantara Botanical Garden in East Kalimantan will be built to represent Indonesia's tropical rainforest landscape. For the design of the Botanical Garden, a database is needed that contains the characteristics of plant species so that it can be used as a basis for species selection. So...

For the design of the Botanical Garden, a database is needed that contains the characteristics of plant species so that it can be used as a basis for species selection. So far, information related to plant characteristics in Kalimantan's tropical forests is still scattered and has not been managed properly. This study aims to characterize woody plant species in Kalimantan using the literature review method. The list of plant species to be studied was extracted from nine scientific journal articles reporting vegetation studies in Kalimantan. Furthermore, literature searches from various sources were carried out to obtain information about plant characteristics including family names, habitus types, fruit types, IUCN conservation status, growth strategies, commercial value, Borneo endemic status, vegetation types, distribution in Indonesia, and planting track records in Kalimantan. From the results of the analysis compiled a list of 543 plant species that become the object of study. The species on the list are members of 77 families. The dominant family is Dipterocarpaceae. The habitus type is dominated by trees while the fruit type is dominated by drupe. Not all plant species have known IUCN conservation status, but Dipterocarpaceae show the highest risk of extinction. The same family can have different growth. As many as 56.7% of plant species were identified their commercial value and dominated by the use of wood. Only 13.3% of the list of plant species are classified as endemic to Borneo. Vegetation types and species distribution are dominated by low land forests and flora of Western Malesia. Only a small percentage (3.5%) of the species list has been reported in planting activities in Kalimantan. text |
