Summary: | The concept of the third place has become an increasingly important and evolving topic, necessitating contextualization within various cultures. The philosophy of "mangan ora mangan ngumpul" held by the Yogyakarta community has a strong connection with the characteristics of the third place making a deeper understanding in this context highly relevant. This research design aims to create a third place that serves as a gathering place for the community living in the Kali Code riverbank area, specifically in Cokrodiningratan village, Yogyakarta. The design approach involves interpreting the concept of space based on the philosophy of "mangan ora mangan ngumpul" (whether eating or not, let's gather). In an effort to combine commercial needs while preserving the authenticity and unique characteristics of the Kali Code community.
The design process attempts to combine the theory of Oldenburg's third place with the philosophy of "mangan ora mangan ngumpul". Methods utilized include relevant literature studies, precedents analysis, and reexamination the meaning of the philosophy through field observations. These observations focus on depicting activities often conducted in the context of 'ngumpul' in the village community along the Kali Code. The results of the observations and potential narratives about the 'ngumpul' activities form the basis for determining criteria in the design of the third place. Eight main criteria are identified, including Panggonan ing Code (place in Code), Saben Wong ing Code (everyone in Code), Cerito ing Code (stories in Code), Buka sak Lawase ing Code (24/7 in Code), Aku Wong Code (I am Code), Ojo Neko-Neko (a low profile), Dolanan ing Code (play in Code), and Srawung ing Code (harmony in Code). These criteria are used as guidelines in the design process.
This research contributes to the development of a design that integrates the understanding of Oldenburg’s third place from global north culture with the third place from Eastern culture, through the culture of 'ngumpul' in the community along Kali Code in Yogyakarta, based on the philosophy of "mangan ora mangan ngumpul".
