Of all the resources needed to supply urban needs, nothing is more important than the human need for food. Carolyn Steel (2009) in one of her books, Hungry City, explains her view about Sitopia, a concept of developing a place with a concern of food distribution. Based on history in the past, the route of a food system has influenced the formation of living spaces and created a dichotomy of urban and rural terms. Wonorejo, a small village in Tulungrejo, Batu, East Java was chosen as a context in this design thesis about food production within a city. This village has a commodity of milk from the local dairy farm. Other than producing milk and agroforestry cooperating with Perhutani, this village also has many tourist destinations, the most popular one is Coban Talun waterfall. With this kind of ecosystem, this context is relevant in this project as a place to develop a food production facility and a destination for leisure. The food hub typology is chosen as an architectural response to escalating this village’s potential as a part of the food system in Batu. Based on Carolyn Steel’s takes on Sitopia, this thesis tries to picture a possible design sample of the architecture as a medium to connect the food producer and the consumer, a key in creating a place that roots on the food system as its foundation. As an architectural design sample, this food hub typology is designed using leisure and educational approaches as a response to its context potential. Therefore, this rural food hub design with these particular approach adds value to the food system in Wonorejo, Tulungrejo village by creating a space for recreation and knowledge exchange medium. text
