One of the seaweed cultivation areas in Indonesia is in the Kei Islands, Southeast Maluku. Since 2020 wet seaweed production has decreased, allegedly due to the use of seeds that have been repeatedly since 2005 resulting in slow seaweed growth and susceptibility to disease attacks. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase seaweed production through the use of quality seeds. The purpose of this study was to compare the growth of local and introduced Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed in the Arso and Sathean areas of the Kei Kecil Islands, Southeast Maluku Regency. Seaweed seedlings were planted in a 25 metre longline divided into 20 points. This study used an experiment with a completely randomised design (CRD). Twenty introduced seedlings (AL) and 20 local seedlings (AA) were planted in the Arso area. In Sathean area, 40 introduced seedlings were planted in two longlines (20 SL), (20 SLY) and 20 local seedlings (SS). Growth observations were made by weighing the seedlings at each point. In Arso, weighing was done every two days while in Sathean it was done once a week. The results showed that in Arso the average weight of introduced seaweed seedlings (AL) 264 g was relatively greater than that of local seedlings (AA), which was 232 g. In Sathean, the weight of introduced seaweed seedlings (AL) was higher than that of local seedlings (AA). In Sathean, introduced seaweed seedlings were also relatively larger at (SL) = 471g and at (SLY) = 219 g while local seedlings (SS) were lower at 199 g. From this study it was found that in both locations the introduced seedlings grew relatively better than the local seedlings as indicated by the difference in weight both in Arso and Sathean. text
