DESIGN OF NATIONALISM AND PATRIOTISM CENTERS AS EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATION FACILITIES

Center of Nationalism and Patriotism with Symbolic Approach for Education and Recreation is a facility that will be designed based on the epithet of Bekasi, the ‘City of Patriots’. This ‘City of Patriots’ hasn’t been represented well. The path of history that is left in Bekasi, mostly in a form of monumental site. Vandalism activity and the high environment temperature are the reason why a solution from designing an interior facility is needed. The implementation of patriotism has always been connected with the nasionalism concept. Both of nationalism and patriotism can be found from the history of Indonesia. Indonesian youths are continuously achieving their dreams for them and for the nation as the implementation of nationalism and patriotism. Through this facility, youths can learn their national identity from Indonesia’s historical event and also to initiate the fire of their spirits to keep chasing their dreams and goals. According to the background, the purpose of this design research is to find out what kind of historical events that are relatable with the youths, the significance of Bekasi in design context, and the translation of historical event into design form. The research methods that are used in the design process are using the qualitative approach by doing literature survey, and field observation of related site. The symbolic approach from communication semiothics by C.S Pierce will be referenced for the design making. Center of Nationalism and Patriotism with Symbolic Approach for Education and Recreation is designed for delivering an education program through recreational activities. Thematic designed facility will be made from applying the combination of design concept and symbolic approach that is adapted from historical events and is to create an immersive interior dan special interior experience. Institutions that will be involved are Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) and Indoneisa’s Museum Association (AMI). The impossibility of a chance to turn back time is a challenge for narrating a historical event. Through the statement before, a space have to be a ‘flashback’ instrument that is able bringing the back the historical events memories. The formulation of the concept that comes from the flashback instrument and the symbolic approach is the beginning of making a design that can address the solution to the needs that have been stated.
