The urban population's demand for housing and economic activities has led to city growth and the spread of urban sprawl to surrounding regions, resulting in the phenomenon known as urban heat island (UHI). Although studies examining the relationship between urban form and the UHI phenomenon have been conducted extensively, they have not received much attention in developing countries. The objective of this research is to identify the connection between the dynamics of urban form and the UHI phenomenon in the city of Surabaya. This study utilizes land cover data and land surface temperature (LST) from satellite imagery as the basis for identifying urban form and UHI distribution. Spatial metrics are employed to identify urban form, while ordinary least squares (OLS) analysis and spatial error model (SEM) regression analysis are used to identify the relationship between urban form and UHI. The SEM analysis results in a regression model with an R-squared value of 90%. The regression model also indicates that there is a relationship between urban form and the increase in LST, as indicated by a positive correlation between PLAND value and LST as well as a negative correlation between AI value and LST. This suggests that the increase in LST is directly proportional to the expansion of dispersed cities. Therefore, spatial planning policies that encourage compact city development and the preservation of green spaces are necessary. text |
