Description
Summary:Population growth due to urbanization presents challenges for big cities around the globe, such as the increasing demand to meet the population need in order to survive, including the need for land availability for affordable settlements in the city center. In Indonesia, in facing these challenges, the right approach in urban planning has not been settled. The development of the area within city seems more likely to be carried out to meet the housing needs of the upper middle class which forces marginalized communities to leave the city center or look for gaps in land to meet the needs for housing and its facilities which have led to the formation of very dense inadequate and illegal settlement areas, including the area called kampung kota, which on the other hand has the potential for compact space quality in the middle of the city which can be a contribution to sustainable urban development, but has not yet received attention in urban planning and design. Departing from this background, this thesis was made with the aim of designing an area in the middle of a city based on the concept of a compact city, which is seen as an appropriate alternative approach in urban design to create a compact and efficient area in the middle of the city in responding to the challenges mentioned above, and the land sharing method as an alternative approach to solve the problem of the existence of illegal settlements on other parties' land. This thesis takes the kampung Cibangkong area, Batununggal sub-district, Bandung city as a study location with the potential for the quality of its compact space and the existence of settlements on land owned by PT. KAI. The result of this design thesis is a design of a compact area in the middle of the city with vertical high-density, high mobility and permeability for pedestrians and cyclists that are safe and comfortable, natural green and blue structures, and a sustainable utility system that supports the sustainability of the area, which is expected to provide benefits to pave the way for further discussions and studies for sustainable urban development.
