The objectives were to determine an optimal synthesis method for polyglycerol at temperatures of 100-140 °C with rapid reaction times and to identify catalyst variations that yield product yields and selectivities above 80% for diglycerol or triglycerol. Polyglycerol synthesis was conducted using glycerol as the feedstock, employing homogenous catalysts or deep eutectic solvents (DES). Benzyl alcohol or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) served as solvents for the KOH-DMSO system, while DES was prepared using K2CO3 or KHCO3. The products were analyzed using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The experimental procedures involved synthesis using glycerol and KOH with DMSO, glycerol and K2CO3 with benzyl alcohol, and glycerol and KOH without solvents. Increasing the reaction duration led to higher glycerol conversion and increased percentages of diglycerol, triglycerol, and higher chain-length polyglycerols. KOH-DMSO enabled polyglycerol production at lower temperatures (140-150 °C) with higher conversion and selectivity. K2CO3 + ZnO catalysts did not yield polyglycerol due to low solubility. KOH synthesis at elevated temperatures (260-280 °C) achieved 100% conversion with predominant long-chain polyglycerols. text
