INDUSTRIAL PRE-DESIGN OF FIRE-RESISTANT WOOD FLOORING MADE FROM SENGON (FALCATARIA MOLUCCANA MIQ.): CHARACTERISTICS OF SENGON (FALCATARIA MOLUCCANA MIQ.) LVL AND LVB TREATED WITH FIRE RETARDANTS SODIUM SILICATE AND DIAMMONIUM PHOSPHATE

The following research was done to understand the effects of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and sodium silicate (SS) as fire retardants, each in 20% concentration using impregnation and coating on the physical and mechanical properties of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Laminated Veneer Board (LVB), a...

The LVL and LVB panels were given 5 different treatments, which include control, DAP impregnation, SS impregnation, DAP coating, and SS coating. The results show that for physical properties, both LVL and LVB has an insignificant change in density, length shrinkage, width shrinkage, and thickness swelling among all 5 of the treatments. However, veneer impregnation shows a significant change between control, DAP impregnation, and SS impregnation. The weight percent gain of DAP and SS towards sengon veneer is 23.55% and 11.95%. For mechanical properties, LVL has a higher value in horizontal shear strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), and modulus of rupture (MOR) compared to LVB, but not in their hardness. DAP impregnation shows significant improvement in MOR of the panel. However, it shows no significant change in its MOE, hardness, or its shear strength. The addition of fire retardants in the panels provide improvements on burning duration of the panels, the most significant of which is the DAP impregnation. Panels with DAP-impregnated veneers shows a burning duration of 36.76 minutes with the burning rate of 0.5 mm/minute. In the formaldehyde emission test, LVL provides a satisfactory score on each of the treatments, within the range of 0.04 mg/l to 0.17 mg/l. LVL delamination is considered satisfactory as well, with the exception of LVL control that has an 8.33% delamination number. Most of the tested values have passed the minimum standard required by the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS), with the exception of the moisture content of DAP and SS-impregnated panels. text
