Description
Summary:The global energy business is shifting towards more sustainable alternatives fuels due to the climate change issue. Countries, companies, and associations start to adopt energy sources with less emission and low carbon footprints in their business portfolio, including introduction of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in aviation industry. Indonesian has made its step towards usage of SAF by introducing the Energy & Mineral Resources Ministry Regulation No.12/2015 to regulates SAF content in Jet Fuel: 2% (2016), 3% (2020) and 5% (2025). Domestic demand of Jet Fuel is projected at 6.730.000 KL (2030), SAF demand will reach 337.000 KL. Currently there is no SAF produced in Indonesia, airplane still use 100% fossilbased Jet Fuel. Indonesia which resides in the tropical region is the one of the largest producers Crude Palm Oil (CPO). The CPO and its derivatives are widely known as its compatibility for vegetable-oil-based fuels due to its chemical structure similar to the fossil-based fuels, including in utilizing as a SAF feedstock. PT. Kilang Pertamina Internasional (PT. KPI, a sub-holding of PERTAMINA who responsible on refining & petrochemical business sector) has conducted a plant trial in December 2020 as a first step to produce SAF from renewable feedstock (Refined Bleached Deodorized Palm Kernel Oil/RBDPKO) in Cilacap Refinery resulting SAF 2.4% (2.4% renewables, and 97.6% fossil-based). SAF 2.4% was then tested in laboratory and flight-test in October 2021 and shows the satisfying results, the performance is comparable to the conventional Jet Fuel. Based on the success, PT. KPI to develop a strategic roadmap in producing SAF at commercial scale from various renewable feedstock such as RBDPKO, CPO or UCO (Used Cooking Oil). Selection of bio-feedstock chosen to produce the SAF will be a key differentiation factor for the success of the project. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is used by five criterias selected, i.e., availability, price, CAPEX, profitability and marketability to analyse and select the most preferable feedstock. This research will contribute to the company and country on developing SAF to fulfill future demand in Indonesia.
